Adjust it so that when the camera is close, it still fades the object out

In my scene I have trees set up to fade out when it gets between the player and the camera and it works fine when the camera is pulled out fairly far back. However, when I scroll in (I'm adjusting the Z with the mouse scroll wheel) it stops fading the tree out. In scene mode I can see that the camera seems to be well in front of the tree so I'm not sure why the raycast isn't hitting the tree.. unless the raycast isn't coming directly from the camera's center point?
